About
Independent politician best known for serving as a Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Lothian region from 2016 to 2021. Although he initially represented the Scottish Greens, he resigned from the party in 2020 and finished the rest of his term as an independent. He is also the author of the 1996 book Who Owns Scotland and the 2015 book The Poor Had No Lawyers.
Before Fame
He earned his degree in forestry from the University of Aberdeen in 1985. As an avid environmentalist and proponent of reforestation and sustainability, he co-founded the environmental charity Reforesting Scotland following his college graduation. He then went on to commence his career as a renewable energy scientist.
Trivia
In 2020, he announced his resignation from the Scottish Greens party, alleging that the party clashed with women's and transgender rights. He later explained in his blog that he wanted "an environment that is more tolerant, questioning, critical, empathetic, and more willing to listen."
