He is the author of The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War and the acclaimed biography Churchill: Walking with Destiny. As a publicly engaged scholar, he has written columns for The Daily Telegraph and The Spectator. 

Before Fame

He studied history at the University of Cambridge, earning both his BA and PhD degrees there.

Trivia

His 1999 book Salisbury: Victorian Titan earned him the Wolfson History Prize and the James Stern Silver Pen Award for Non-Fiction. He was a vocal supporter of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Family Life

He was married to Camilla Henderson from 1995 to 2001. The couple had two children together. He later married businesswoman Susan Gilchrist.
