Liberal politician and surgeon who has served as the premier of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2020. He represents the electoral district of Humber-Gros Morne in the House of Assembly. As of 2022, he is the only premier of a province whose government is controlled by the liberal party.
Before Fame
He earned a bachelor's in science from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 2001, he graduated from the MUN School of Medicine. He accepted a Fellowship in orthopedic trauma from the University of Maryland in 2006. He was named Memorial University of Newfoundland's Alumnus of the Year in 2012. In 2015, he completed a diploma in organizational leadership from the University of Oxford. In that same year, he began to express his interest in politics.
Trivia
In 2015, he received the Ignatian Spirit Award and in 2017 was named the Canadian Red Cross' humanitarian of the year for Newfoundland and Labrador. He is known for his philanthropic work, supporting Haiti after their 2010 earthquake. In 2020, he released a book about his experiences there called Hope in the Balance: A Newfoundland Doctor Meets a World in Crisis. He helped administer vaccines during the Omicron variant outbreak in 2021.
Family Life
He is married to Allison Furey and they have 3 children: Rachel, Maggie and Mark. His father, George Furey, serves as the speaker of the Senate of Canada. His uncle, Chuck Furey, served as a cabinet minister.
