Andres Cantor

About

Sportscaster and expert most famous for initiating the notorious "GOOOOOOAL!" cheer whenever a goal is scored during soccer matches. He works as a Spanish-language commentary contributor and analyst in sports for the United States, due largely in part to his dual citizenship with Argentina and the US. He is also the owner of and announcer for Futbol de Primera, a radio network which maintains the Spanish-language radio rights of the FIFA World Cups, dating back to 2002.

Before Fame

He graduated from the University of Southern California after his family relocated to the area from Buenos Aires, Argentina. After joining Univision in 1987, he became known amongst both Spanish and English-speaking viewers for his goal-call, particularly during the 1994 World Cup. 

Trivia

He has been the recipient of numerous honors within his field, including six Emmy Awards. Some of his other accolades include the title of Sports Personality of the Year by the American Sportscaster Association in 1994 and being named as one of the world's most legendary broadcasters by FIFA Magazine in 2014.

Family Life

His mother was Romanian and his father was born in Argentina. His grandparents on his father's side were originally from Poland and had fled to Argentina in order to escape the Nazi occupation. He has a son named Nico, who is a contributor for the CBS Sports' UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League coverage.

Associated With

He famously broke into tears at the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final when Gonzalo Montiel kicked the game-winning penalty, making his home-country of Argentina the champions.
