The child of American parents, she grew up in Texas, Colorado, New Jersey, and New York and studied at the University of Colorado and Boston University.

She served for twenty-two years as the Writer-in-Residence at Lyon College and was awarded the Lamar Williamson Prize for Excellence in Teaching during this period.

She married Todd Budy in the summer of 1976 and later gave birth to a son named Brooke.
