She was born on a farm in Summertown, Tennessee. Her mother gave her her first guitar. Her father was a Jamaican musician and her mother a painter who was born in Kaiserslautern, Germany. As a child, she moved around a lot with her mom to places like Miami, New York, Munich, and even a Darjeeling monastery in India so that her mother could learn Tibetan Buddhist thangka painting.
