Spanish novelist, author, writer, journalist, and newspaper columnist known for writing 14 novels and three short-story collections including The Age of Lulu (1989), The Wind From the East, (2002), The Frozen Heart (2007), and Dr García's Patients (2017).
Before Fame
She studied geography and history at the Complutense University of Madrid. She became a contributing writer for encyclopedias and travel guides before focusing on novel writing. Her break-out novel was The Ages of Lulu, which was published in the year 1989.
Trivia
She considered the Odyssey by Homer and Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes to be the two works most influential to her own work. Six of her novels were made into films. She was also a tireless social activist. In 1998, she was a member of Izquierda Abierta and showed support for the self-incrimination of Ramona Maneiro. Maneiro had assisted her partner Ramón Sampedro in euthanasia.
Family Life
She was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. She had three siblings. She married the poet Luis García Montero in 1994. She had two children. She died after a year-long battle with cancer on November 27th, 2023.
Associated With
She was called "one of the most important writers of our time" by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. She was very critical of Francisco Franco and a lot of her work centered on her criticisms of his regime. Her novel The Ages of Lulu was turned into a film that featured Javier Bardem in his first film appearance.
