Islamic jurist and former chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council. He held a prominent role in Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in the world, serving as a temporary chief adviser from 1991 to 1992.
Before Fame
He majored in Usul al-fiqh, the principles of Islamic jurisprudence, at As'adiyah Madrasah in Sengkang, South Sulawesi. From 1959 to 1965 he served as a jurist and inspectorate of religious courts. In 1971 he became involved in NU at the national level and was appointed to the House of Representatives where he remained until 1987.
Trivia
He is nationally recognized as an expert in his field of Fiqh, serving as expert of both NU and Darul Dakwah wal Irsyad. He founded the Pondok Pesantren Darul Dakwah Al Irsyad boarding school in 1947, of which he is still caretaker. He is a member of the advisory board for the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals.

He married Nyai Aisyah Umar in 1993 or 1994. The two had never met before exchanging vows. They are known for having had an equal and respectful relationship.

He argued with Abdurrahman Wahid over the issues of aid from the Foundation for Social Welfare Fund, resulting in his withdrawal from NU chairmanship in 1992.
