An American science fiction writer and critic, he is best known for his Anthony Villiers series and for his award-winning novel, Rite of Passage. He also published The World Beyond the Hill, a critical study of the genre of science fiction.
Before Fame
He studied library science at the University of Chicago. He published his first three novels-- Rite of Passage, Star Well, and The Thurb Revolution-- in 1968.

He and his wife, Cory, co-authored the Hugo Award-winning work, World Beyond the Hill: Science Fiction and the Quest for Transcendence.
