Before Fame
Popp attended Gesamtschule Berger Feld in Gelsenkirchen, one of four facilities certified as "elite schools of football" by the German Football Association. She was the school's only female pupil and was only granted attendance via a special permit. She studied and trained with junior players of the German men's Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04. She left school after the 12th grade with a Fachabitur diploma.
Trivia
After doing a one-year internship as a physiotherapist, she completed a three-year apprenticeship to become a zookeeper at Tierpark Essehof in Lehre. She has twice been named German Footballer of the Year, in 2014 and 2016, and in 2019 was named captain of the German national team. She has scored over 50 goals for Germany and nearly 100 for her club team.
