About
Mathematician who served as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Basel in Germany after having been a Rockefeller Research Fellow at Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh. His work on differential transformations, complex function theory, linear algebra, numerical analysis and other topics primarily centered around algebra and number theory led to his authoring over 275 individual publications.
Before Fame
He attended the Kiev College of Commerce, where he earned the mentorship of Dmitry Grave, a renowned mathematician. He then studied at Marburg University under the supervision of German mathematician Kurt Hensel. After the end of World War I, he relocated to Göttingen, Germany, where he earned his doctorate and completed his habilitation in 1922.
Trivia
He and his wife built a villa overlooking the Lake of Lugano in Montagnola which they called Casa Almarost, based on their combined name of ALexander MARgret OSTrowski. He began living there with his wife after retiring.
Family Life
He was the son of Mark Ostrowski, a merchant, and Vera Rashevskaya. He married psychoanalyst Margret Sachs in 1949.

William James Sidis and Srinivasa Ramanujan were also world-renowned mathematicians.
