He was the grand duke of Finland from 1809 until his death in 1825. Alexander became Emperor of Russia when his father was assassinated on March 23, 1801. Called an autocrat and "Jacobin," a man of the world and a mystic, Alexander appeared to his contemporaries as a riddle which each read according to his own temperament.
