Armenian-Ethiopian painter and art teacher who became the first contemporary African artist whose work was acquired by the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris.

Before Fame

He was awarded second prize at Haile Selassie I's Jubilee Anniversary Celebration in 1954. This honor allowed him to secure a scholarship to continue his studies in Europe.

He designed a 1977 United Nations stamp, becoming the first African artist to create a First Day Cover.
