Ahmed al-Sharaa

Politician who is the president of Syria. He is known as a Syrian revolutionary, military commander, and leader who has served as the country's president since January 2025. As president, he has initiated the suspension of the Syrian constitution, disbanded various armed groups, and is overseeing the nation's transition towards post civil-war reconstruction.

Before Fame

He grew up in the capital and largest city in Syria called Damascus. He joined al-Qaeda in Iraq shortly before the 2003 invasion and fought for three years in the Iraqi insurgency. American forces captured and imprisoned him from 2006 to 2011.

Trivia

He is sometimes called Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, which is his nom de guerre, or a name that is used during war times. Following his release from U.S. detention in 2011, he founded the al-Nusra Front in 2012 to oppose Bashar Al-Assad's regime during the Syrian civil war.

He is from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His mother was a geography teacher and his father is Hussein al-Sharaa. He was raised in a household of three brothers and two sisters. His wife is named Latifa al-Droubi, and they have three children,
