Best known for directing and co-writing the Will Ferrell comedy films Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers. He earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for his 2015 film The Big Short. He also co-founded the comedy website Funny or Die with Ferrell.

He attended Penn State and Temple University and was involved in several comedy and improv groups.

He was a writer on Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001. In 2021, he directed the popular Netflix movie Don't Look Up.
