Actress regarded by many as the "Mother of Bollywood." At the time of her death, she had worked in more than 250 films in a career spanning 74 years. The role largely responsible for launching her career was that of Balraj Sahni's wife in the Bollywood movie Waqt. She has also appeared in films such as Mera Naam Joker, Chandni, and Nine Hours to Rama.
Before Fame
Her career commenced at All India Radio, Lahore, where she worked as a radio jockey. After the partition of India, she continued to work for All India Radio, Delhi. Her on-screen debut came in 1938, when she appeared in the film Fashionable Wife.
Trivia
She donated her home in Pune to the Janseva Foundation, a charitable organization, in exchange for a guarantee that Dr. Vinod Shah, the founder and chairman of the foundation, would take care of her for the rest of her life.
Family Life
She was married to her husband Clifford Douglas Peters until his death. Together, they had a son named Jyotin.

She appeared in the 2003 romantic comedy drama film Kal Ho Naa Ho, which starred Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta.
