A dedicated policewoman is on the trail of a sadistic serial killer who leaves a bone shard as his calling card. She enlists the help of a forensic criminology expert to assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

The film is based upon Jeffery Deaver's 1997 crime novel of the same name. In 2020 a TV series called Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, also based on the 1997 novel, premiered.
