A young orphan in a parallel universe travels far North to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from a mysterious organization. It was based on the book Northern Lights, the first novel in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.

The movie won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It was one of New Line Cinema's most expensive projects ever. HBO would adapt a show called His Dark Materials from Pullman's books.
