A demoted, ego-thirsty Civil War veteran named Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday lives along with his daughter Philadelphia at Fort Apache, an American stronghold not too far from the local Apache tribe that lives in the area. Not fully understanding the true connection between the local Natives and the US military because he's an outsider, Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday and his second in-command Captain Kirby York will battle over whether they believe the US military's relationship with the natives is mutually beneficial.
Actress Shirley Temple was pregnant during the filming of this movie and there was concern that riding horses or wearing her corset too tight could cause a miscarriage. John Ford received an award for Best Director during the Locarno International Film Festival back in 1948.
