A narrow, tropical country on the west coast of Africa bordered by Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso. It has a short coastline with palm-lined beaches and lagoons. From the 16th century, Togo and the surrounding region were known as The Slave Coast.
It is one of the world's top producers of phosphates, which are used in fertilizers. Voodoo and witch doctors are part of traditional beliefs. Fufu is a staple food made from mashed cassava, yams and green plantains.
