A country in the Middle East that is boarded by the Mediterranean Sea to the west. It is also bordered by Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. It is governed by Ba'athists, who advocate Arab socialism and Arab nationalism.
During ancient times, the country was occupied and ruled by empires including the Egyptians, Hittites, Babylonians, Greeks and Romans. It is home to the oldest library in the world dating from around 3,000 BC. The ancient language of Aramaic is still spoken in Syria.
