An island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. It is the world's fourth largest island. Due to former colonial rule, the island developed ties with the French-speaking countries of western Africa.
The country is also known as the Great Red Island for its iron-rich red soil. It is home to 70 species of lemurs found nowhere else on earth. Rice is the country's main staple food.
