A tropical country in West Africa. It borders Senegal, Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in which Islam is the predominant religion.
It has a history of political instability and widespread poverty. The majority of the population harvests and sells cashews for income. The Bissagos or Bijagos Islands are run by a matriarchal society.
