An overseas department and region of France located in South America on the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Suriname and Brazil. It is the only territory on the continental mainland of either North or South America that is under the sovereignty of a European state.
French is the official language and the majority of the population speaks Creole. It has substantial resources such as gold, iron, bauxite and diamonds. The major commercial exports are shrimp, rosewood essence and rice.
